Can Boro Cage the Bluebirds?

The FA Cup exit to Cardiff City in 2008 is still firmly in the memory of the Boro fans that were there to witness the Welsh side take Middlesbrough apart at will and win 2-0.

Cardiff went on to reach the FA Cup Final at Wembley and narrowly lost out to Portsmouth by a single goal. Some said that we bottled it that day and others spoke about that year being our best chance of winning the FA Cup considering we could have potentially played Pompey in the final.

There was huge hype surrounding that game in April last year because the previous day, in the other last eight matches, Manchester United and Chelsea were knocked out by Portsmouth and Barnsley respectively meaning that there was added excitement that we could actually get our hands on the trophy.

21 months later and we are struggling to maintain a top six place in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League and face Cardiff City in the league on Sunday.

Dave Jones’ side are sitting in third place and travel to the Riverside on the back of a 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion last week and with it boast the fourth best away record in the league.

Players that put on a Boro shirt in April 2008 against the Bluebirds let themselves down and also let the fans down. What a fitting way it would be for those players and the new faces in Strachan’s side to show what they should have done two seasons ago in the famous cup.

The players owe us a performance after Tuesday night’s loss to Blackpool. Let’s see how they react!

Remember that game like it was yesterday. Absolutely gutted that we didn’t do anything that day. I have a feeling that we will get three points on Sunday. Up the Boro!!
