Southgate Red-Faced About Cattermole August 12, 2009

If the rumours are true, Lee Cattermole could be on his way to Sunderland in the next few days. Our former scrapper is being linked with a move to the Stadium of Light to link-up with Steve Bruce again. The move is reported to be worth £10million to Wigan Athletic. That means in the space of 14 months Wigan will have profited £6.5million after they take off the price they paid Middlesbrough just over a year ago.

Was it a gamble to let Lee Cattermole leave the Riverside or was it just plain stupidity by the Boro boss. I’m sure Southgate is now regretting letting the 21-year-old leave. I remember the reason why Southgate let him go.

“When you get into the first team as young as he has, it’s frustrating when you’re not a bit more regular in the side.” – Gareth Southgate

This has since backfired on Southgate because Cattermole thrived at Wigan last season under the guidance of Steve Bruce. As soon as Cattermole left the Riverside their were cracks appearing in the Boro midfield. George Boateng had not been replaced either so the cover was just not there. To make matters worse the Stockton-on-Tees born lad even rubbed salt into the wound when he clattered Didier Digard earlier this year, injuring the Frenchman for two months. Digard was probably the reason why Southgate let Cattermole go so no wonder the feisty youngster got his own back on Southgate.

With injuries to Didier Digard and to Matthew Bates, we are becoming increasingly lightweight in the middle of the park again. The Boro boss needs to get the chequebook out and bring in some tough tackling midfielders otherwise we will be bullied and out-muscled in matches this season.

No movement in the transfer market this week has given us a few more worries. Pull your finger out Gareth!

Everybody knows why he was sold. if he was still at the boro he wouldnt be half the player he is as he’d still be surrounded by his hangers on and getting pissed every night at the black bull

He still does doesn’t he!? Man management for me. Steve Bruce is the sort of manager that takes no s**t from players. Southgate is a lettuce when it comes to controlling players.

Even thou he is a good player his off field antics ment I believe southgate was right to sell cattermole and if he goes to Sunderland he’ll be back in with his old mates getting hammered and causing trouble like woodgate before him the club off the pitch are better with out him! Trouble trouble trouble!

there was other stuff going on off-field. no doubt we missed him and probably still do because he is a great player, but it was probably the right decision to move him on given his off the field antics.

As Stanley says, to be fair. I don’t think it’s the answer to get shot of players who are problem cases off the pitch, rather to work with them and if necessary impose some discipline. You can’t solve a problem just by pushing it into a corner – well, you can, but it leads to embarassments like the above where Wigan are about to cash in.

Shame on us. Another James Morrison.

Agree with Stanley – Southgate couldn’t manage him – or in fact most of the others and cannot get the best out of good players.
Alves will go on to score goals for fun wherever he goes to – its all about confidence, feeling wanted and playing to the players strengths – Maccarone scoring for fun in Italy again….

I just hope that Keith Lamb was savvy enough to realise his future potential, and include some sort of sell-on clause so at least we get a cut of Wigan’s profit. . . but I doubt it

I do agree he is a good player but who wants a bowyer/ barton type player at your club?! Not a very good role model and at boro cattermole would have become like the above players

Chelsea are closing in on a move for Serbian U-21 midfielder Nemanja Matic in a £5m deal. The midfielder, from MFK Kosice, could become their fourth signing of the summer.

last season Kosice want Serbian U-21 midfielder Nemanja Matic in a £2m deal.

Getting rid of Cattermole was brilliant management by Gareth. Who wants a fit, mean, hungry, battling, scrapping, never say die, heart on the sleeve midfield player who excelled for the England U 21’s this summer was the player of the tournament and is likely to replace Lamps or Gerrard in the England engine room in the next three to four years and has 15 years left of his career?

Not MFC that’s for sure!
