Time Is Almost Up On Southgate’s Search July 27, 2009

trackback

The Middlesbrough boss is running out of time to fill the gaps in the ever depleting Boro squad. Downing and Turnbull have been replaced by Yeates and Coyne respectively, but with injuries to Matthew Bates and Didier Digard occurring in the last five days we are becoming more and more lightweight in the middle and up front.
Southgate has been searching for the right players to fill the gaps of weakness which resulted in us getting relegated last season. Surely with Mido and Tuncay nearing the exit we are well behind on options up front. Alves is still here yes, but for how long? and even if he does stay how interested will he be?!
That leaves us with Marvin Emnes and Jeremie Aliadiere for the opening games of the season – both of which are not out-and-out goal scorers. We need players at the club and quick otherwise we will be left behind and struggling before we know it.
Gareth needs to get some experience up top and in the centre of midfield. Even if it means bringing in an old pair of legs or two it will still benefit the first team massively. Anyone to make the numbers up because if we get any more injuries we are in deep trouble before the season has even started.
Has anyone got Mikel Beck’s number?! Or even Hamilton Ricard?! What about Uwe Fuchs!

We need the magic man in the side, but I think SkySports pay his bills now so it will be hard to prize him away from his comedy commentating. Right on though, we will be in a spot of bother if we are not careful.

I’m sure Quashie is looking for a new home about now

Very good shout. I recall us being interested in him a couple of seasons ago. I wonder which club he’ll be joining this summer!? Gareth, are you reading this!

Uwe Fuchs! Now that brings back memories. Great player for 7 or 8 games. His goals helped us to promotion to the Premier League back in 95. We definitely need a bruiser up front this season. Someone who can head a ball. Even Brian Deane did a job up top with his big head.

Its as if we are back in the times when we only had the likes of Joseph Desire Job and Nemeth up front. I think that Hesselink on a free transfer would be a good shout. Along with Alves, he ripped up Holland’s first division so i am sure they could both cut it in the Championship.

Brrr Mikkel Beck brings back some memories, and not all (many?) good ones, though I do remember him being quite effective at second tier level.
I should very much like Jan Ven of Hess to sign, but I imagine it’s a case of us seeing if we can get shot of the liggers first, and him waiting around for someone better to come along.

Leroy Lita has also been linked – so I asked an intelligent mate of mine who is a staunch Reading supporter what he thought – “decent goal scorer, instinctive finisher, but terrible attitude and questionable lifestyle, bad influence in dressing room. Royals happy to let him go even though Doyle has gone. Coppell loaned him out constantly as when not playing he can be very disruptive – enjoys the nightlife. Wants to stay in London / South east. Palace didn’t offer him a place after a recent trial – but on his day was brilliant and scored some great goals for us”
Hmmmmm – just what we need, another moody and erratic striker!

I get that impression of him as well. I remember a few years back when he was playing in the Euro U21 Championships. After a low start he started banging in the goals. He seems to have dipped ever since. For free though so Southgate might have a punt on a pay-as-you-play basis. You’re dead right though – moody and erratic!
