Matthew Bates has ended speculation over his future by signing a three-year extension on his contract. The 22-year-old was free to leave the Riverside this summer, but Steve Gibson and Keith Lamb have secured his services for three more years keeping him at Middlesbrough until 2012.

This news immediately ended speculation about a possible move to West Ham or Everton this summer. The new contract extension signals Gibson’s intentions for the future. He wants to keep his best players and will offer them great deals to keep them at the club.

Bates is in, now for Wheater, Downing, Johnson, Tuncay, Digard and Huth to commit!

Top lad! He will be a key player next season for us and as you say the others could join him in staying.

It’ll be interesting to see which position Gareth plays him in mind

I would think he will use him in midfield. I know he is naturally a defender, but he looked decent in the middle just in front of the back four. Loads of energy. You’re right though – it will be interesting to where he is used next season.
